Cornsilk, also known as Sweet Corn, Maize. The cultivation of Indian corn, a plant native to the Americas, antedates Christopher Columbus' discovery of the New World by nearly 3000 years. The Aztecs, Mayas, Incas & other Indian Tribes were all descendants of maize-growing agricultural peoples who inhabited the Middle Americas. Their Gods wet personifications of nature, Maize was treated with the greatest veneration. Even loose kernels on the ground were never stepped on & collected as part of the deity. Nicolas Lemery 1712 began its initial medicinal use in Europe, where it become popularised by Parke-Davis (now a subsidiary of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals) in 1880.
Cornsilks active constituents are: Flavonoids, Chlorogenic acid, Volatile oils, Alkaloids, Phytosterols, Saponins, Mucilage, Allantoin, PABA & Tannins. Nutritionally rich in: Vitamins K, B Vitamins, Vitamin C, Silica & Potassium. Main area of use is the Urinary tract for treating: dysuria, cystitis (BHP* specific), urethritis, prostatitis, nocturnal enuresis. Historically cornsilk was also used for as a poultice for ulcers, swellings and rheumatism (joint) pain. As well as nausea & vomiting.
